Most developers treat testing as a chore and debugging as a curse. Here is the reality of how to build reliable systems, save your weekends from emergency pages, and actually trust what you deploy.

"It Works on My Machine" (And Other Lies We Tell)

Let’s be honest. You’ve said it. I’ve said it. "It works on my machine" is the famous last words spoken right before a deployment bursts into flames.

I remember a deployment back in 2019. We were pushing a payment gateway update. Passed all local tests. Looked great on staging. We pushed it to production on a Friday afternoon (mistake number one). By 7 PM, customer support was swamped. It turned out our local environment had a slightly different library version than the production server.

Result? We lost about $15,000 in transactions in two hours.

Testing isn't about checking a box so your manager gets off your back. It’s about sleep. If you don't test properly, you don't sleep. It’s that simple. And debugging? That’s the price you pay for skipping the testing phase.

But when you're dealing with a race condition or a memory leak, printing text to the console is like trying to empty the ocean with a spoon.

The "Divide and Conquer" Method

The biggest mistake junior devs make is changing five things at once hoping one of them fixes the bug. Then it starts working, and they have no idea why. That’s terrifying.

Here is the workflow that saves time:

Reproduce it reliably. If you can't make it fail on command, you can't fix it. If it’s an intermittent bug, look at the logs. Look for patterns in time, user load, or data types.
Isolate the variable. Comment out code until the bug stops. The last thing you commented out is the culprit.
Fix it, then write a test. This is non-negotiable. If you fix a bug but don't write a test case that replicates that specific bug, you will re-introduce it six months from now.

We were building a scheduling app. Simple stuff. User picks a time, we save it.
