The "BeautifulSoup" Trap

I still remember the first "real" data project I built. It was 2014, and I wanted to track price drops on a few specific camera lenses. I didn't know what an API was. I barely knew Python. Here’s the thing about the web: what you see isn't usually what the server sent. Modern sites use React, Vue, or Angular. They send a skeleton of a page, and then JavaScript fills in the blanks.

If you just grab the source code with Python, you might get an empty container.

To get the data, you have to use a headless browser like Selenium. Now you're waiting for a fake browser to load a 5MB page just to get a $400 price tag. It’s slow. It’s heavy. It breaks constantly.

The Solution? Go straight to the source.

Most of these websites are fetching that data from an internal API anyway. They’re asking a database for a JSON file. You don't need to scrape the paint off the walls; you just need to ask the kitchen for the menu.

Talking the Language: Python and JSON

This isn't theory. This is the bread and butter of backend work.

When you use an API, you're sending a request. Usually, it's a GET request. You're saying, "Hey, send me the user data for ID 44."

The server doesn't send back a pretty webpage. It sends back JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). Despite the name, for us Python devs, it’s basically just a dictionary. That’s it. curly braces, key-value pairs.

• 500: Their fault. The server crashed.

Stop trying to parse HTML unless you absolutely have to. It’s fragile, heavy, and unreliable.
