Keeping all your data centralized in one or two regions is easier for your small engineering team, and it’s cheaper initially. But here is the catastrophic risk: a single, adverse legal ruling (or a snap decision by a foreign government) could immediately cut off access to a major market or force a panic migration that will cost you tens of millions and months of downtime. It’s putting your entire operation into one legal and geopolitical basket.

1- Stop Guessing: Data Inventory Audit. You must know, granularly, what data you hold (PII, financial, IP), its legal source (where the user was located), and its exact, physical location today. Most companies think they know this, but a forensic deep dive often reveals terrifying and non-compliant surprises.
2- Get the Lawyers and Engineers in One Room. Stop letting Legal write policies the Engineers can’t implement, and stop letting Engineers build architectures that terrify the Legal team. They need to understand each other: lawyers must grasp the cloud providers' regions, and engineers must understand jurisdictional risk.
3- Future-Proof Your Cloud Contract. Go back to your providers and ask these tough questions: "What is your commitment to isolated, single-country regions, and how long is that guarantee?" and "Can I programmatically enforce data residency at the database or even the table level, not just the massive regional level?"
